CRUISING ALASKA

When is the Alaska Cruise Season

The first ship in Alaska normally arrives during the second week of May, and the Last Ship is normally leaving Alaska the end of September.  The most popular time to cruise is in June, July, & August.  "Shoulder Season" is usually May and September these tend to be the most affordable months, and some of the best wildlife view because when it is colder in the mountains wildlife tend to migrate toward the valleys.  Note:  During April/May and Sept/Oct are the only months you will find repositioning cruises from Florida through the Panama, Up the coast, and into Alaska and visa versa.

How far in advance should I book my Alaskan cruise?

This is a very good question.  Most people believe the rumor that if they wait till the last minute, you'll get a good deal.  There is some truth in that but here is the general rule of thumb in the industry.  Cruise lines want you to book early so they know what their inventory is, most people know if they wait someone will cut some prices, however groups usually given the good rates REALLY EARLY.  Individuals that want a Suite, small ship itinerary, or a specific place on the ship should book early, because they tend to book up first. Considering Alaska offers some of the best scenery in the world, if you haven't had a Suite, Alaska is the one place you should.  If you book at the last minute there can be some good deals, but don't expect to have the cabin of your dreams, don't expect air tickets to be cheap, and stay flexible with your selection of dates, cruise line, and ship.   Sign up for the AH! Deal Bulletin

Charter                                            Book 1 to 10 years in advance
Incentive                                          1 to 3 years in advance
Group (16 or more people)           7 mo to 2 years in advance
Small Group (Under 16 people)   6 mo to 2 years
Individual booking                          1 month to 1 year
Last Minute                                     1 day to 6 months

****Note most Early booking Discounts end Mid-January.   So for the best deal try to book by Jan 15th.

What should I pack?

Remember to dress like an ONION in layers.  The dress code in Alaska is based on comfort and is very causal, and informal.  During the day this is what I recommend. The summers in Alaska tend to be warmer then most people expect, pack light clothes too.  You might even go away with a tan!

                                jeans, khaki's, slacks
sweaters, sweatshirts, t-shirts, flannel shirts, cotton, and wool.
                                waterproof jacket or windbreaker
Comfortable shoes (tennis shoes or hiking boots)
                                Sunglasses
Camera & Film (Zoom lens is recommended)
                                Binoculars
Swimsuit (for large ship cruisers, or those that really want to experience glacier water :))
                                *Note towels are provided.

MOST important is comfortable shoes especially if your planning on doing a cruise-tour or any optional excursion.  I know you have those shoes in the back of your closet that are so comfortable you don't want to through them out, but so ugly your family & friends don't want you to wear them in public! Well, break them out of your closet they are perfect for Alaska.  High heels are appropriate on the ship in the evening but you'll probably feel like a fish out of water in the Alaskan Ports with them on.

Each cruise and cruise line varies on the number of evenings that are Casual, Informal, and Formal. Details will be sent to you in your documents. Most small ships are casual all the time.  Large ships on a 7 day cruise usually have two formal, one informal, and the rest are casual.  However, there are other dining options besides the main dining room on most large ships if your not interested in dressing up.

Casual:  dresses or slacks, blouses for women;  sports shirts and trousers for men.
Informal (or smart casual):   dresses or pantsuits for women; sport shirts, trousers and jackets for men.
Formal:   cocktail dresses for women: suits and ties, or tuxedos for men.

In addition, on Cruise-Tours bring comfortable shoes, long pants, a couple pair of shorts and t-shirts (the interior can get very warm).  Because most of your luggage is inaccessible while traveling on the motor coaches/boats/trains I highly recommend a day-pack or backpack.  This will make items like medication, sunglasses, reading material, lotion, jacket or sweater and anything else you'll need during the day accessible.

How much luggage can I bring?

Due to limitations on airplanes, use common sense when packing.  Your cruise documents will provide detailed information.  If your planning a land package my suggestion is to only pack one bag per person due to motorcoach restrictions. If you are traveling with a spouse or close friend on a cruise-tour.  I recommend packing all your cruise gear in one suitcase and use the other for your land portion of the trip.  This way you will only have to worry about packing/unpacking one bag each night.

Where do Alaskan Cruises start from?

Usually boarding occurs in one of the following cities:
                                                    Vancouver
                                                    Seattle
                                                    Seward/ Anchorage
                                                    Skagway (occasionally)
                                                    Juneau (occasionally)

Note: that it small ship cruising can start from multiple locations.

What is there to do in the ports?

Each port offers unique history, excursions, sights, shopping, and water holes.  Most ships offer port lectures that will further inform you on the details of each port, what to expect, what not to miss, and if there is any local events while your in town.  I recommend venturing a little further then just the main streets to meet the locals.

Cruise Tours and Tours in Alaska

What is a Cruise Tour?

It is a cruise with a combination of a land package.  The tour portion of your trip can be taken before the cruise or after the cruise.  I recommend doing the land portion first then the cruise because you'll want a couple days to recover from the land portion and you'll know a whole new group of friends from the land portion of your tour.  However, cruise lines know this is the most popular choice so if you take the cruise first then the land your more likely to get a deal. If your starting the land portion in Skagway the Gold Rush History flows up to Dawson nicely.

First Time Cruisers to Alaska

How do I choose a ship?

I know it can be a daunting task with over 40 ships to choose from.  It's important to pick a ship based on your expectations.  Here are some questions to ask yourself.

Is anyone in your group Alumni with any cruise line?
Are you traveling with a family?
Are you wanting a Classy ship?
Are you wanting a Historical ship?
Are you wanting a Adventure Ship?
Are you wanting to travel on a small ship, large ship, or on a yacht?
Is having a balcony or verandah important?
Are you wanting a specific itinerary?
Are you wanting a new Ship?

If you can answer as many of these questions as possible before you read about the ships.  This line of questioning will most likely narrow the 40 ships to one.  The President Picks are some of my recommendations if you feel completely lost.  If you are having trouble feel free to contact us at info@alaskaheritage.com

How do I choose an itinerary?

There are 3 basic cruise itineraries in Alaska. It tends to look confusing because every cruise line names the same itinerary with their own label.  There are slight modifications on some cruise itineraries.  Niche cruise lines and Cruise Tours offer the most unique itineraries for a slightly higher price.  See our map for details.
The Inside Passage Vancouver-Vancouver or Seattle-Seattle
                                        The Northbound Vancouver/Seattle to Seward/Anchorage
                                        The Southbound Seward/Anchorage to Vancouver/Seattle

Note: Most cruise tours offer the North or Southbound cruises.

Will I get seasick cruising in Alaska?

If your hesitant on sailing because a fear of motion sickness, Alaska is one of the best places to cruise.  Large ship cruising offers the best stability.  You will hardly notice any motion even if you are sensitive to motion sickness in airplanes or cars.  One of the reasons is because newer ships are equipped with stabilizers for smooth sailing!  The Inside passage cruise would be the best itinerary because most of the cruising is between Southeast islands that protects you from the open ocean. Getting a cabin that places you mid-ship is also important, there is less motion mid-ship.  There is no guarantee that you will or won't get seasick, but if you have severe difficulties in the past consult your doctor to get patches or pills prior to departure.  This will further insure smooth sailing. Rumors have it staying hydrated, eating green apples, and wearing acupressure wristbands help too.

Are there medical facilities aboard?

There are limited medical facilities on board most Large cruise lines.  Small cruise lines sometimes have an on-board doctor, but no facilities.  Alaska offers state of the art medical facilities in most all ports of call.  If a major emergency occurs on-board, the U.S. Coast Guard or the National Guard normally assists in transporting passengers to the appropriate medical facilities.

The biggest surprise at the end of a cruise normally is your bar bill.  The biggest expenses normally on-board are shore-excursions and alcohol.

Normally you pay for:  Alcoholic drinks, soft drinks, gambling, photos, shore-excursions, bingo, gratuities, shopping, baby-sitting, and incidentals.
Sometimes you pay for: Laundry, Ironing, alternate dining rooms, and some onboard activities like rock climbing.
You normally never pay for:  Main dining meals and some alternate dining rooms, room service, nightly entertainment, daily activities for adults and children, sports on board.

Keep in mind normally Cruise prices do not include port charges, taxes, transfers, and airfare but could be included in your price quote.  Beverage programs on some cruises can be purchased for anyone under 17 years old and under at a minimal fee.  This allows them unlimited fountain drinks at a fixed price for the entire cruise.

Excellent! Cruising offer some of the best food from Surf & Turf to Fruits & Nuts and a lot of it.  There is a wide selection that can accommodate any type of dietary needs. When are the meal times?

Most any time is meal time on a Ship.  The main dining room times on large ships are divided into two "seatings" the first seating starts usually between 5-6 pm, and the second seating is usually starts between 7:30-8:30pm. Depending on the ship.  Based on your table size request you will be seated with 2 to 10 people.  Large ships offer a verity of dining options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  Small ships normally have one main Seating time in the evening with a open dining room.  Which means seating is not assigned and the dress code tends to be casual.

Note: At time of booking you will indicate which seating time you prefer.  On general cruises most people tend to like first seating, however in Alaska because it is port intensive I recommend second seating.  This allows you maximum time in each port without having to rush back to the ship to be ready for eating.  Not only that because of the extended daylight eating late will feel like the appropriate time to have a meal.

What should I know if I'm a traveling single?

Alaska is a very safe destination to travel.  Several single women and men travel to Alaska on cruises and tours alone. It is convenient, safe, and fun way to experience the Last Frontier.  Prices are based on double occupancy.  If you are traveling alone most cruise lines offer single supplement rates that range from 150 to 200% of published rates.  Once and awhile a cruise line will have a special for singles.  Or, if paying that extra amount is too much you might want to consider a "single share" rate.  Which means you pay the normal published rate and the cruise line will match you up with another person that is a single of the same sex.  If they can not find a match they normally ask you to pay only a reduced single supplement normally to cover the hotel expenses if a land tour is included with your cruise.  Some single rooms are available but based on availability.

Will I feel bored or confined while cruising?

This is a common worry.  There are so many activities and sights during the day and in the evening it is difficult to be bored.  However, I think we all know people who just choose to be bored, but it certainly is not the lack of activities or sights.   If you are concerned about being confined, don't, most cruises both small and large offer a variety of lounges, rooms, and decks to get away and stretch your legs.   Some people may prefer a large ship for the large spaces, and multiple lounges.

On large ships private cocktail party are available for a price.  Price is dependant on how many people, how long the bar is open, and how many drinks you want served.   Small ships discourage private cocktail parties because it excludes passengers in a intimate environment.  If you are chartering the ship anything is possible.

Ship to Shore calls are possible on all cruise lines, but they cost a pretty penny.  My suggestion is to try to wait to call on your cell phone when in port or use a pay phone.  Most cell phones work while your in port.

Is there internet access while cruising?

On most of the newer large ships there is internet access on-board for a fee.  There are places to log-on to the internet or plug in a laptop in most of the major ports of call in Alaska.
